Let's take a look at this problem in detail Guitar Tabs While tablature or tab seems to be a rather recent invention that was born with the electric guitar, the truth is that it has been around for hundreds of years. Even before the invention of the instrument we know today as "guitar", we see examples of tablature being used usually with fretted instruments such as the lute. Examples of tabs in the Western world today date back to the 1300's. In Asia tab was used even before that. In today's modern world guitar tab is made up of of six lines that represent the six guitar strings on which numbers are placed which correspond to the frets on the guitar. Most tabs, tablature, tab formats today do not show you the rhythm. The information which is presented gives you a clear picture of what strings and frets should be played. The tablature format does not give you information in regards to the notes (pitches) that are being played. Guitar Sheet Music The sheet music for guitar on the other hand provides you with rhythmic as well as note (pitch) information. This is important because it's like getting a detailed blueprint of a car. It allows you to see "inside" and understand exactly how everything works. This is fantastic because you can use this information to fix your hotrod if it breaks down, or build yourself a new one. Knowing how to read sheet music allows you to understand and break things down, analyze your favorite artists or composers and use those techniques when building your own material, songs. Being able to "see" inside the music gives you a huge advantage by giving you the power to manipulate and direct the musical flow of your ideas in such a way as to achieve what you desire musically. To put it plainly, the ability to understand sheet music will allow you to create and juggle musical ideas with skills far beyond what other musicians posses. I don't think that all can be reduced to a question of guitar tablature versus notation. Traditional guitar sheet music does have its problems when it comes to marking strings and frets that need to be used. Traditional notation for the guitar does allow for the string to be identified. This, when used in conjunction with the indicated note gives you the fret number. However this tends to fill up the visual space making the notation much harder to read and follow. A combination of notation with tablature attached seems to be the best answer. Notation will also allow for the indication of the finger that should be used for certain note. While a combination of notation and tablature will yield the best results, we will focus more on notation in this article because of the simple fact that most guitarists know how to read tab, so it's the learning of sheet music notation that will set you apart from the rest of the pack. Learning to read notation... the Good the Bad and the Ugly If you understand the benefit of being able to read sheet music but are intimidated by the look and feel of sheet music notation, then take a deep breath and relax because things are never as bad as they first appear. I'm familiar with the feeling of looking at notation and feeling like you are looking at alien writings. In truth music is not nearly as complicated as it seems at first glance. it takes a little patience and perseverance to learn but the results are definitely worth it. You might be thinking that you will never be able to crack the code of notation. Well then, I'll just have to prove to you that it's not nearly as difficult as you may think by teaching you some notation basics right here and now. Let me introduce you to the musical notes Guitar sheet music is usually written on staff made up of five lines. You can write notes either on the line or in between the lines. An easy way to remember the notes that are on the lines of the staff is by recalling the following acronym: Every Good Boy Does Fine (E G B D F). This corresponds to the notes on the lines of the staff as read from the bottom up. In order to remember the notes that are in this space is between the lines, just remember FACE (F A C E as read from the bottom up). Now, if you have to tell me what note resides on the fourth space of the staff, as read from the bottom up, you can easily think of FACE and figure out that E is the note we were searching for. There you have it, less than a minute and you know all the notes that are on the staff. If you just put a blank staff in front of you and quiz yourself over what note lies on a particular line or space, you'll soon be able to recall them without thinking of the acronyms listed. So to start off with, get a multi oscillator synth (ideally 3 or 4 oscillators) like the albino, logic's ES2, Massive etc. Set all oscillators to the saw tooth. The saw tooth is very rich in harmonic waves, The normal waves ramps upward and then drops sharply. There are also sawtooth waves where the wave ramps down and then rises sharply. Commonly known as a reverse sawtooth. As audio signals, the two orientations of sawtooth wave sound identical until paired together After you have got your synth running with 3 oscillators, it's time to detune them by around +/- 25cents, this is essential for drum and bass and dubstep. This gives the Reese a very deep edgy sound, rather than just a buzzy electro kind of sound. Once you have got your detuned saw tooth, (this is essentially the basis of the Reece) - You can go ahead and start manipulating and shaping the sound for your specific genre, dubstep or drum and bass. Here are some of the main parameters you can use: Filter Envelopes A nice way to get a movement on the Reese bass is to add envelope to the filter section, Reese bass patches are extremely sensitive to filters and utilizing a high pass filter you can get a very driven sounding lead, or use a low pass and get a very fat bass. try using around 20% of filter attack for dubstep and 30% for jungle. Phaser Because of the harmonic phases all ready occurring due to the multiple oscillation, adding an external phaser effect can and does work very well. It's better to use a sparse amount of phase to subtly enhance the sound rather than extreme amounts Flanger The flange effect can add a nice bit of subtle metallic rasp to the sound, this helps gives you a big bad dubstep sound. Delay The delay effect can make a Reese sound huge! Try using a delay just before the drop. Reverb Again minimal uses of reverb can act very aggressively on your sound, Guitar amp reverbs tend to work well with Reese bass and also come packed with distortion for extra bite. Other effects that add madness to your Reese include: Distortion, compression, LFO, unison, analog knobs and auto filters work especially well with dubstep.
